  • Editing on same project file on Macbook Pro i7 and Mac Pro 8 Core 2.26

    Hi,

I am new on FCP, I recently got Macbook Pro i7 (for portability!) and have a Mac Pro at home. I have started working on some video projects recently with footage from 5d mark 2.

I want to know a workflow which allows me to work with the same project file (and media files) on both the computers, when I am on the road use the MBP i7 and when at home use the MP.

The solution I can think of is external hdd with firewire 800 with media and project file on it.

Am I on the right track?
Is this setup actually better than using project and media files from the boot hdd?
What is the best workflow that use?

I think the simplest solution would be to have the project and media files on an external/portable hard drive, as long as it’s 7200 rpm, not a 5400 rpm bus powered drive.

The main reason being, you wouldn’t have to reconnect the media constantly. as far as the project is concerned it’s always in the same place, on the specified drive.

Make sure you use the Canon E1 plugin and transcode your 5d footage in your project when you’re importing it. it works like a charm and keeps everything in apple’s efficient pro res 422 codec.

Thanks Prema. I’m tried it out yesterday with my Lacie d2 1tb FireWire 800 everything works fine. And canon e1 is a god send, I’ve been using it for a month.

I’m skeptical about accessing the data on a cold start did give me the beach ball. Hopefully while intensive editing it doesn’t show up.

Just a question, is this kind of ext hdd setup preferable or using an internal data hdd (not the boot drive) is better?

I recently bought one of those eSata external drive docks. It seems to work fine, and allows me to simply buy raw drives and not a dozen power supplies. That might work for you also, as you run out of space due to HD file sizes…a TB a project (G)

    Google search results:

using an internal drive and constantly moving it back and forth between machines is a recipe for trouble. FW800 comes close to maxing most drives, and I’ve personally edited DVCPRO HD 1080p30 and XDCAM 1080p 35mbit from a d2 quadra with no difficulties whatsoever.

    Hi Alf,

I was looking into esata express card, dont know what to buy, what do you suggest. Also, from what I have read, FW800 is very consistent at 800mbps and is bus powered, what about esata?

    Thanks.
