    Was recently asked about password protecting an external hard drive that someone would edit off of as well.

    As far as I can tell formatting the drive as OSX Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) is the only option for this that truly password protects the data.
    Is this something that is going to create a problem as far as read/write speed affecting the ability to edit HD video.

    Generally we are working in ProRes proxy and regular ProRes formats. The drive would be USB 3 @7200 rpm

    I have my boot drive encrypted on my MacBook Pro and I don’t notice any difference in performance. Editing video off of the drive is just like it was before. I don’t believe the encryption adds much overhead at all.
