editing .mov files in vegas 8
Hi – I’m having a reel problem getting a client’s footage from a Kodak Z18 into my Vegas 8 timeline. When I try it, I get the audio track, but the video track is black. My Vegas version is 8.0c(build 260)and the version of Quicktime I have is 7.6.6. Anybody have any idea how to solve this problem? Thanks in advance…

Yup. Downgrade Quicktime to 7.6.4 or earlier or upgrade Vegas Pro to 9.0e. Vegas Pro 8 and Quicktime 7.6.5+ don’t work together.

Hi John – thanks so much for your fast response. I downgraded to Quicktime 7.6 and it worked like a charm. BUT…now I’m not getting audio! (I’m using a windows xp computer)
Any ideas?

Something doesn’t sound right because you were getting audio before. Vegas relies on Quicktime for opening .mov files so it is probably a Quicktime problem. I would completely uninstall Quicktime. Reboot your computer. Then install Quicktime 7.6.4 and see if that helps.

Hey John – I tried that and it didn’t work. Same thing. No sound. Then I found another tip online – simply change the extension from .mov to .mp4. Worked like magic. Who knew? Thanks for all your help. Really appreciate it.

That makes sense… Changing the extensions takes Quicktime out of the picture and uses Sony’s AVC/h.264 decoder. Glad you got it working.
