  • Editing in 23.98, delivering in 29.97

Posted by Evan John on November 7, 2009 at 3:15 pm

I am editing an EPK with footage that was originally shot on HDCam tapes at 23.98 FPS. Due to storage issues, we had to transcode the selects to SD 23.98 as ProRes QT files. So I will be editing at 23.98, and delivering to Betacam and DVD as 29.97.

I am somewhat unsure about how to get from a finished 23.98 FCP sequence to 29.97. I have read posts on here about the Kona 3, and the Nattress plugin, and from what I understand FCP duplicates frames when dropping 23.98 into a 29.97 sequence. Are there other methods to get from A to B? After Effects perhaps?

    Thanks.

    Evan,

Here’s a wikipedia link to explain the conversion from 23.98 to 29.97.

Frames are not “duplicated”. You really should read the wiki to understand the process. As far as I know,
there is no other way to convert from 23.98 to 29.97.

Well, you have to output to betacam anyway, so getting a capture card like the Kona LHi (the Kona 3 is overkill unless you are doing 2K) or the Matrox MXO2 is necessary anyway. Just output via the capture card to betacam and it will add the proper pulldown.

As for DVD…you can author a 23.98 DVD and it will play on regular DVD players. Look at all those Hollywood films shot on film at 24fps that are on DVD…

We do this all the time. You can use After Effects which can add proper 3:2 pulldown when rendering, just pay close attention to the gamma of your footage changing after the render. PR-HQ in and ou should be fine, just keep an eye on it. Depending on your program, a real-time output through a Kona card will also properly add pulldown as it goes to tape. Just set up fcp for 23.98 editin and the Kona for 29.97 out and you are golden.

Thanks Shane, I’m surprised the solution to this is so simple. I will be using a Blackmagic Decklink HD capture card for deck control. Once I have a final 23.98 sequence, what is the proper Easy Setup to use for layoff? 29.97 NTSC ProRes, correct?

No….ProRes is a CAPTURE codec. You are dealing with DVCPRO HD. You set your easy setup to match your footage. Then you use the card interface to do the conversion. Since I don’t use Decklink, I don’t know what those are…sorry.
