  • Editing in 2.35…

Posted by Sean Tyler on January 14, 2012 at 8:57 pm

All my questions are related to my first project, a ten minute short shot on the 5D, edited on a PC using CS 5.5, the end goal being projection on a theater screen in 2.35 aspect ratio.

I assume some of my questions will be jaw dropping to many of you, but please understand that while I’m a quick learner I’m still very new to the editing process, and still learning and not always finding the most efficient ways of doing things at first…

Today’s question… I understand that I can export in the 2.35 ratio at the end of the edit but I want to be able to see the 2.35 ratio while editing. What I have been doing so far is to make the dimension of each Sequence 1920×816, this seems to work well except when I send a clip to AE to edit, when it comes back it’s permanently cropped at 2.35, losing a lot of the information. To solve this issue I’ve been creating a 1920×1080 Sequence for sending clips over to AE, then copying them over to the cropped Sequence to edit.

This feels a little convoluted, I assume there’s a better way of doing this that I just haven’t discovered yet, so any help or insights would be great.

    Thanks for any thoughts!

If you want to see the 2.35 while editing drop a letterbox mask over the 1920×1080 footage.
You can make one yourself in the titler or adjust the title template (Mattes) that comes with the program
