  • Editing HDV as DV

Okay, I’ve read all the posts I can find with HDV in them, and I don’t really see an answer to this question. There are lots of new settings with HDV, and I’m just trying to get to a solution for capturing HDV, converting to NTSC DV, editing, and outputting DV25 material. So, here is how I am doing it.

Capture using HDV codec into FCP.
Export from FCP via quicktime conversion.
For export settings, set to DV/DVCPRO NTSC, maximum rez., 4:3, interlaced, current fps
    Audio – Apple Lossless 48khz.

    Once this is done.

Reimport clip, and set sequence settings to:
    Frame Size: NTSC DV (3:2)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: NTSC CCR601
    Field dom.: Upper
    Quicktime Compressor: DV/DVCPRO NTSC.
    Audio; 48Khz, 16 bit.

With these settings, I get an excellent looking picture (heck, it’s all good compared to my old VX1000), and I can easily edit the video. I do get a red render bar on the audio which I don’t understand because my sequence settings and the export settings match, but…

Would this be the correct (most efficient/best picture quality without HD equip) set up for video that is going to only go to NTSC, and which must have final output through DV25 (firewire). In otherwords, I don’t have blackmagic board, or any need for HD output.

Thank for responding, or pointing me to a previous post I missed.

    Thanks!

I think the faster way to get to the same result would be to let your camera/deck do the downconversion… I’m pretty sure that the Sony gear will output the HDV as DV during playback, so you’d just capture it as DV in the first place.

Yes, it does. That’s how I’m using it most of the time.

Haha! Thanks, that is quite a bit easier. It took me all morning to figure out the camera downconvert – who knew I had “i.link”? Anyhow, works great now, thanks very much!

Are you using the Sony HVR-Z1 by chance with FCP 4.5? Shooting 1080i and capturing/editing DV-NTSC codec 720×480 16:9?

Is this possible or do I need to be on FCP 5 for some reason.

    Thanks in advance.

I’m using 5, and an FX1. But I don’t see why it wouldn’t work with 4.5. Also, I am not capturing it 16×9, but 4×3, since that is how most people will be seeing my DVD.
