I’m considering buying a Canon XH-A1. Will I need a computer upgrade to handle editing the HDV footage?

    Current:
    iMac
2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    ATI Radeon X1600, 256 MB

Also a MacBook Pro with slightly lower stats.

Do I need a better machine, or will these work?

It will work, though not very smoothly. And consider that you may need to work with uncompressed HD as well if you want to work in After Effects which really taxes a system.

I would consider a G-RAID (raid 0)system for a mac to handle the fast data flow.
