In a word: Yes.

Worth investing? Compared to what? How do you define conform? It means different things to different people. How much of the process to you want to do? Color? Mastering? Audio Layback? FCP is only the tip of the iceberg. Your biggest expense will be the decks, the storage, proper monitoring (Both picure and signal), air conditioning, and of course the experienced talent to run it.

If you’ve got enough projects happening to keep the room busy, I’d say acquiring FCP is a no brainer.

yes, there are at least 10 post houses in LA using FCP and a Kona 2 for 444 editing.
Plaster City, Laser Pacific, Efilm. Technicolor to name a few.

Well the card will cost $2500, as to the hard drive how much bigger is uncompressed video compared to… say miniDV. Is it simply 5 times, or are there other factors that make it even greater?

good point but not from someone that works in 444.

dv footage is about 3.75 mgs a second
1080p24 4:4:4 content is about 198.87 mgs a second.
1080p60 4:4:4: content is about 497.66 mgs a second

my calculator says that is between 53x to 132.7x as much….

I have heard that considering a 770×492 CCD area on each of 3 chips the uncompressed 8-bit RGB is about 27MBytes/sec at 24fps. If this is true the difference be only 8 times native miniDV compression. Does this sound reasonable?
