    I’m editing a 10 minute piece from 30 hours of material.

    I”ve made DVDs of the material to choose what I need, but I’d rather make those choices scanning non-linear sources in an NLE environment to make a rough cut. Even if I do so only in an off-line manner from mpegs(then go to the tapes to capture only what I’m going to need to conform)

    Now it occurs to me to ask if anyone knows if premiere pro 1.5 (on a P4 @ 2.4 Ghz, 2GB ram) will be usable with 30 1 hour clips on the timeline? I have always thought not.

    I didn’t think it would work with 30 1-hour avis (which might be ideal if it was workable – maybe even as an on-line set-up.)

    It’s occured to me now that it might work to work with 30 1-hour mpeg clips. (If so, any advice on the best way to create those now – in reverse from the DVDs?)

    thanks mikkel – looks like that would get me back my mpeg files for each hour of tape. (probabaly with a loss in quality but no matter for off-lining.)

    The other question is whether a system will stably run with 30 1-hour mpegs (or any other type of file) in the bin, with a few hundred instances of them on a ten to twenty minute timeline.

    My workflow if I have so much material: Edit first on paper
    – Make a shotlist in a spreasheet including timecodes
    – Assign a moviechapter name to each shot (or group of shots)
    – Sort the sheet on chaptername
    – Number the shots in each chapter in edit order
    – Sort on Chaptername and edit order to create an editlist
    – Check if the editlist is OK
    – Sort the editlist back to capturelist
    – Capture only the shots with an edit number and include the number
    in the clipname
    – In the project window all clips are sorted on clipname in the right
    edit order

    It looks time consuming but capturing 30 hours, off-line edtiting
    and then again capturing and editing is maybe more timeconsuming.
    If you need during editing not captured material, you can find it very easy on your shotlist to capture yet.

    Thanks Phocras – that’s helpful advice (and affirmation) because I have a detailed inventory and index of the material (not in spreadsheet form, though); and I’ve been working toward using that to do the first edit on paper as you suggest.

    But it lacks a way to work strongly with the feel of the motion and emotion of the material. It seems to me that this method is leading to editing so much more for content rather than for feel.

    Can anyone predict how a system like this(PPro 1.5,2.4 Ghz P4,2GB Ram)will perform with (easiest to accomplish) 30 1-hour mpegs? (Or even – if I dare – 30 avis?) I know it’s unconventional and I initially dismissed the idea, but I thought I’d see if anyone has tried anything like that.
