Editing from external please advise!!!!!
Posted by Marcel Lee on May 14, 2010 at 5:05 pmI am wrong but is it ill-advised to edit XDCAM EX 1080p24 footage from a lacie raid drive via firewire 800. i was told that was wrong and i must edit from the internal sata drive. Can some please let me know, what you think.

May 14, 2010 at 5:20 pmIt’s not optimal, but if you’re editing natively, the bandwidth will probably do. If you’ve converted to Pro Res 422 (don’t do HQ) it’ll require more bandwidth but you still might be okay. How large is the 800 drive, and how full is it? That will play a large factor, especially if you’re using it to render to. As it gets more full, it will run slower, especially if the drive becomes more than 80% full.

May 14, 2010 at 6:30 pmI edit EX footage using external FW800 drives all the time. Unless the drive is very full you shouldn’t have any problems. (But you should never let your media drives become full anyway…) And if you only have one internal drive, with the OS and applications on it, you should absolutely use the external drive. Storing your media on the system drive is definitely not recommended.

May 14, 2010 at 10:34 pmYes you can, this is not a problem,
We edit 1 hour reality series every day on FW 800 drives with 1080/24p XDCAM footage and never have a problem. More than enough bandwidthRichard Cooper
