  • Editing DVCPRO HD – frame rates and conversion?

Posted by Matt Dufilho on February 5, 2008 at 4:49 am

I am editing DVCPRO HD 720p60 footage. This was captured via Firestore when shooting, and the cam’s frame rate had been set for 24p.

When editing do I just set my Easy Setup for DVCPRO HD 720p24, open a new sequence (23.98), drop in the footage, and render?

OR do I need to use the frame rate converter to convert the 59.98 footage to 23.98 before editing?

    Thanks for any help.

If your entire project is 24, then do an Easy Setup 720/24.

Thanks for taking the time to answer, Walter.

Just so I understand. Is the 3:2 pulldown automatically applied to the clip once it is dropped in my 23.98 sequence? There isn’t some conversion, capture, or logging that has to be done to apply the pulldown, right?

    Thanks again.

Don’t do that. That is a bad way to edit…rendering all your footage before you even edit it. If you shot 720p24 and it comes in at 59.94, you should REMOVE PULLDOWN it first. Both Cinema Tools and FCP have this option. Test one clip to make sure it looks right.

Otherwise, choose a DVCPRO HD 720p60 Easy Setup and use that, edit at 59.94 since that is what your footage was shot as. But if you shot 720p24 and recorded to the firestore, you should be able to remove the pulldown.

Did you record to Quicktime movies or P2 data?

I was present for the shooting, but was not the DP. However, I know that it was recorded as Quicktime movs.

I just highlighted one of my clips in the browser (these were brought straight in from the Firestore), went to Tools>Remove Advance Pulldown…and I got an error message telling me that the file did not contain DCVPRO, 50, or HD data? What’s up with that?

You have to use the Panasonic Frame Rate Converter software for this. It is best to move all of your clips outside of their bins and have them sit at root level in your project.

Tools > DVCPro HD Frame Rate Converter.

Or you can simply edit @ 59.94 as has been mentioned by dear leaders.
