Editing DVCPRO codec in After Effects
Posted by John Corino on October 18, 2007 at 7:09 pmI was wanting to get the panasonic hd camera that shoots on p2 cards in the dvcpro codec. I was told that premiere and after effects wont support the files. Is the Matrox RT.X2 my only option to get the adobe products to support it? It sounds good but its another grand I have to put into everything.

October 18, 2007 at 7:22 pmi believe there are a few software converters out there… i did a quick search and found this one from focus enhancements.
i think it retails for around $300.

October 18, 2007 at 7:23 pmAs of today CS3 Premiere Pro does support the P2 workflow. I’m not sure about After Effects but here is a tutorial on the Adobe P2 workflow…..
from the PPro CS3 forum:
It doesn’t show up on the Downloads/Updates part of Adobe.com, but use the “Update” option under any CS3 program’s Help menu, and it’ll show. Just downloaded and installed. Works fantastically well.
And just to consolidate this thread, here’s a workflow tutorial…..

October 18, 2007 at 8:21 pmthat’s pretty cool, i was wondering when that update was coming (it was rumored for months)…
i hope it also applies to ae… since i don’t edit, i’d love to get p2/mxf directly into ae. i’ll have to dig up a p2 folder after i update and see how it works…

October 21, 2007 at 3:49 pmYou can’t import P2 files (MXF) directly into AE, and probably never will be able to since AE is not an editing app but rather a finishing app.
The bigger issue that people run into is that DVCPRO files are not PC compatible – this MAY be resolved with the Premiere update people are talking about, but I’m not sure. If not, you will need a DVCPRO50 codec to use the files, such as the free Matrox codec:

October 22, 2007 at 2:41 pmi added to a post last week on the adobe forum asking about p2/mxf support for ae, they responded that ae will support it by the end of this year.
as far as needing the codec for pc… i have a macpro at work without the dvcprohd codec, but after updating the premiere pro, i was able to import p2 files and work with them. however, i can’t find any added codec for dvcprohd that the update might have installed.
this may be due to premiere seeming to not use quicktime to gain access to the mxf data… it is a pretty cool workflow, compared to fcp. there is no transcoding of the mxf to quicktime, it just opens the p2 files directly, much like avid, and allows export back to p2 (although i’m not sure if that would be a prefered workflow… rough cuts, maybe).
