  • editing clips with different aspect ratio on FCPX

Posted by Suan k. Seol on February 2, 2025 at 11:11 am

    Hi,

I’m editing a 1080×720 project. Most of the clips were shot 1080×720, but some on 3840×2160.

3840×2160 can be edited with downsized proxy.

The problem is that I found some clips were shot on 4096×2160 by mistake..

They keep getting disconnected saying different aspect ration and I found out this mistake.

Is there any way that I can edit those 4096 clips by changing or cropping the original’s ratio??

    Thanks!

    Hi,

First, you said 1080 by 720, could it be 1280 by 720 which is HD resolution? Normally you can work with all sizes of video in FCP, it is not compulsory to have all clips in the same resolution. Can you upload a screenshot of the error to identify better, because this is not a normal behaviour you are mentioning.

    Oops! I meant 1920×1080 😂😂

    Thanks for correcting!

Here I attach the image of error. When I checked with individual clip, I found they were on different ratio.

Ahh yes, this is about proxy files. If you created proxy files outside Final Cut Pro it may cause this problem. Probably the audio channels of the original video files and proxy files don’t match. If you import these 13 original video files into FCP and make a proxy inside FCP all will be good. You can select these 13 clips in the browser and right-click on them choose transcode and choose the proxy option. It will create the correct proxy files.
