Editing between two long streams and keeping them in sync
Hi,
I’ve probably missed something major but I thought I’d post this question here, I’ve asked one or two other people, but I know how busy people can be.
Basically I have dv footage from a video camera and some mpeg4 footage from a modern digicam. both cameras on a tripod at a wedding at different angles as such to capture the faces of the bride&groom. one source has better audio than the other so i know i can ungroup the streams and keep the one piece of audio. thing is i’m not sure my approach is the best way. at the moment i’ve pain-stakingly lined each of the two videos up so the one audio file is now in sync — kinda.. i plan on splitting the videos in the timeline and cutting out the pieces of video i don’t want to appear and i fear i will move it a little too much and make the sync all wrong or perhaps this isn’t the best way to do it ..
i have something like this , cause i want to cut between the two cameras .. different shots from the two cameras…

audioa |———-|i have no idea if splitting the videos and trying to make sure i’ve kept the audio in sync between the two videos is the best way to do it, or whether i should try and cut the clips up in advance.. i’m guessing they should be on the two lines, i’m just not sure of the most effective way to switch between showing a specific video track without moving things around (which would potentially break the audio/video sync)
Any comments you have I would appreciate.

Take a look at Vol 1 #9 of my newsletters for full details on multiple ways to edit multi-cam footage. The script option is not available in the “Movie Studio” versions. Also, Vegas Pro 8 has multi-cam capabilities built-in.

Thanks–this is really helpful. I have a similar situation whereby I shot an interview with two cameras, and wanted a clean way to switch from one to the other, without doing a lot of cutting of video.
Fortunately I kept both cameras running the whole time, and so I didn’t have a sync issue. That made using the “Envelope” feature in Vegas really easy, to not just switch from one stream to the other, but even easily define the fade between one and the other.
