Editing .AVI files in Final Cut Pro 5
I am trying to edit .AVI files in Final Cut Pro 5.
I have converted the files to .MOV files w/Quicktime.
I placed one of the .MOV files in FCP 5, and can view it fine in the Viewer.
But when I place it in the Sequence, it plays with a screen saying “UNRENDERED”.
I can render the footage, I suppose, but based on past experience, that would make it harder to edit.
Thanks for any help I can get in regards of how to edit .AVI files.

Converted to what codec of .mov? There are dozens. FCP only works with editing codecs. Look in the Easy Setup list to see what your options are.

.mov is just an extension just like avi. You need to convert to a FCP friendly codec such as ProRes.

You’re doing the right thing to convert to Quicktime, but what codec are you using? It needs to be an editing one, then when you edit you should have the sequence setting on the same codec as the quicktimes to avoid having to render. IIRC, Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) or DV would be suitable for FCP5.
