Editing Anamorphic 2944 x 2160
Hey guys, I’m editing some Arri Anamorphic 2k footage, aspect ratio is 2944 x 2160. If you’re familiar with this ratio, you know that once you desqueeze the footage and bring the clips into Premiere, it has extra black padding on the left and right.
What is the proper sequence settings / dimensions I should be editing this footage in?
Here are some options I’ve come across on message boards:
1) Edit in the native sequence, 2944 x 2160 and scale up the clips to eliminate the extra padding.
2) Edit in 2880 x 2160, no scaling required.
3) Edit in a 2048 x 858 sequence, and scale the clips to fit
My final delivery will be in 1080p, by the way. So, I’d like to edit everything in the high res sequences, lay graphics over the top etc. and then export out at 1080p, unless that’s not the best way. Would love to hear suggestions.

2944×2160 is a ProRes format with black padding left/right, the active image is actually 2880×2160.
Currently there are two way depending on your lens choice:
a) 4:3 2.8K with anamorphic lenses
– set your project resolution to 2048×858
– set Input scaling preset to “Scale full frame with crop”Since the 4:3 is way too wide for 2.39 we need to do two things: crop & scale.
for the 4:3 2.8K shot set sizing “Zoom” to 1.142 (2944/2578) and “Height” to 0.5 to squeeze the image.
Now you can edit your 2048×858 next to this shots.

ts a big reduction in quality. you can upload 4k to youtube as youtube will automatically letterbox.as you have surmised, going from anamorphic to 16:9 won’t be pretty.
Since:
Aspect Ratio = (Horizontal Resolution / Vertical Resolution) × Pixel Aspect Ratioso your AR = 2.66666 square
and 16:9 = 1.77 squareTo fit the player perfectly, encode at these resolutions:
2160p: 3840×2160
1440p: 2560×1440
1080p: 1920×1080but if you had to keep AR, 2.6 square would be 1920/720 square pixels or 2880×1080.
anamorphic videos will be letterboxed in both 16:9 and 4:3 players. The player can only do this if the native aspect ratio of the video is maintained – i.e. don’t add black bars to the video itself.
Note: If you add letterboxing to a video before uploading it, the widescreen player will add vertical bars, resulting in black bars all around the video and a bad viewing experience. -
Thanks so much. So basically I should edit the original 2944 x 2160 clips in a 2048×858 sequence, and scale the clips accordingly? My final output will be for broadcast tv, so is there anything else I need to consider, knowing this?

depends what AR you want. 2.39 would be 1920/2.39 or 803. It’s always best to work in and export same AR so your text isn’t offset. most people do AR 2.4 800(Bluray scope) because some codecs don’t support an odd number of pixels.

That being said, how do you feel about this workflow: nest my full 2k (2944 x 2160) clips into a 1920 x 803 sequence, and lay all my graphics and effects etc. into that sequence. Then export out at 1920 x 1080, and scale to fit so that we maintain the widescreen look with the proper 2.39 letterbox.

exporting 1080 would be essentially burning in black.
Most stations take letterbox with black but not dcp or vimeo. -
Gotcha, so is it just a matter of asking stations beforehand if they accept anamorphic or if they prefer a 1080 with the crop?
