  editing an mpeg4

  I am interested in editing an mpeg4 film that I downloaded; I can import it and see the video and sound tracts in the timeline but when I try to render any edits my system crashes or slows down to a crawl, I can only render very small pieces. any suggestions?? I am funning FCP 4.1. with a G5 dual 1.8 1gig ram.
