  • Editing After Capture from HVX 200

I’d like to know if anyone has a link to a workflow through FCP and the hardware needed to capture from the HVX 200, edit on FCP, then output. I have FCP 4.5 HD, but I am only set up to edit SD.

I currently am on G5 dual 2.0 with Promax SATA 500 GB, Aja I/O. Do I need anything like a Kona 2? I know I would certainly need more drive space. What external drives on the market could handle the throughput necessary?

Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

Well technically all you need is a Firewire cable. DVCPROHD over Firewire has been supported in FCP for nearly two years now using SATA, ATA, FW400 and FW800 drives(though 400’s are a bit dodgy for this esp capture). If you wanted to view back on an HD monitor you’d go back through the camera. It’s only if you wanted to view on an SD monitor where you’d need to get some extra hardware for the HD-SD downconvert but I’d recommend instead getting an HD monitor. They are pretty affordable these days compared to before.

Thanks for the info. I have a Sony PVM 20L5 monitor. I may have to look into getting the HD card to stick in it. However, the card retails for over nearly $3,000. But, I suppose it would be worth it for CRT monitoring.

    so noah,

if i were to purchase a panasonic BT-LH1700W, i will be able to have realtime preview via fcp since this a hd monitor but as for the pvm14l5 or 20L5, an aja/decklink is needed to do this? thanks.

Not quite sure what you mean there- the HVX can be used as a playthrough device to 720p/1080i compatible monitors. The AJA card could be used in its place as a playthrough or as an HD to SD downconvertor for non-HD monitors.

what i’m wondering is realtime previewing of hvx footage while editing in fcp, for example, the same way as done w/ dv editing where you have the camera hooked up via firewire from the mac and s-video out to the monitor showing you realtime previews while editing. except what i’m wondering is for dvcprohd footage w/ the hvx component outputs and into an hd monitor such as the panny mentioned above?

    That should be no problem.

Brad, you dont’ need the expensive HD board with the Sony 20L5 monitor. I have this monitor also… feed it analogue component from an HD source and it will switch over to display the HD signal.

Really! Then I wonder what the HD card actually does then.
