  • Editing a Copy changes the Original – what am I missing?

I guess I am just too tired since I am probably missing something totally obvious here.

In my main comp are several “screens”. Each screen should show individual prerendered footage.
I prepared one screen (made it a comp and run the footage inside the comp)
Then I copied this comp a few times, placed the copies where I needed them and started to place individual movies inside the comps.

The problem is, that each time I place a movie inside one of the comps it changes the footage in ALL other comps too.
Like they are all just a clone. how can I “unlink” them?

Duplicate the screen comp in the project panel, not in the timeline panel of your main comp.

If you have an entire hierarchy within that screen comp, use True Comp Duplicator [link]. (If you prefer to do this yourself without the script, Save as… “Screen Comp”, then select the screen comp in the project panel and File > Reduce project. Save again, then re-open your previous project and import the Screen Comp.aep file as many times as you need.

Duplicate the comp in “project window”. In this way the source would be duplicated. Let me know if it helps.

Thanks Walter, that was very valuable Info!

One more question. Each of the comps (the screens inside my main comp) has already some effects applied, is animated and placed individually.

Is this work lost or is there a way how I can replace these comps inside the main comp with the ones that I will create in the project? something like “replace footage” but in this case for the comps.

Select the layer you want to replace in your timeline.

Select the item you want to replace it with in your project panel.

Hold down the Alt/Option key and drag the item from the project panel onto the selected layer for replacement in the timeline.
