Editing 720p 23.98 and stock footage
So I’ve looked around and haven’t found exactly what I’m looking for.
I am editing material brought into FCP from a P2 card. It ingests at 720p60 23..98 fps. I have to deliver at 1080i 29.97.
The workflow that I currently have is to edit on a DVCPro HD 720p60 sequence and will digigize all of the stock material upres at 1080i and will have to render.
For online, I will send out the P2 23.98 source material for telecine and bring it back in at 1080i 29.97. I will then add the beta stock back into the sequence and output for color correction.
Does this make sense? Am I not seeing any potential problems for the future?

Are you saying that you are going to export the DVCPROHD to beta sp?
I would use Nattress Standards Converter to add a 2:3 pulldown to the 23.98 footage and either convert it to 1080 using the same plug in or compressor.

I’m sorry I should have been more specific.
I plan on ouputting a DVCPro HD 720p tape to send out for telecine and then ingesting the telecined tape. Then I would put the beta stock footage back into the sequence and output a 1080i tape for color correction.
Make sense? Should I do something different?

Easiest thing for you to do is just add a 2:3 pulldown using Nattress standards converter and upconverting using it too (or use compressor).
You could also use After Effects to add a 2:3 pulldown.

Youre losing me here. Telecine is what you do with FILM, not tape. Telecine means transfer film onto tape.
Are you getting your 720p footage UPCONVERTED to 1080i 29.97 via a terranex? That is what I’d do. Same with the betaSP…upconvert via Terranex. But AFTER the cut is locked…so that you don’t upconvert everything.

I thought that telecine would also work to go from 24fps to 29.97.

Telecine is a film term. To TELECINE film to tape. In doing that it transfers 24fps to 29.97fps…and then you can REVERSE TELECINE the footage to get it back to 24fps, or 23.98. THAT might be where you confusion lies.
You don’t telecine a tape…you get it converted. And your best bet is a Terranex box.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. So basically I will have to find a place to send it out to change it from 24 to 29.97 unless i get the box.

Or you can use the Nattress Standards Converter or After Effects to add a 2:3 pulldown if you want to do it yourself, but the Terranex would do an great job it you’re going to take it out of your system.

you cannot telecine a tape, that is a film to video conversion…
what is it that you are trying to do?
