Editing 320×240 videos / quality seems to suffer
While I usually edit and produce videos from and to a DV source, lately I have been tasked with editing avi videos that were captured in 320×240 resolution and producing them at that same resolution as well.
The first problem I encountered was that the footage would get imported and played back with a huge black frame around it. I got around this by ensuring that the option “Scale clips to project dimensions when adding to sequence” was checked in the Project Settings->General area.
Unfortunately, however, it would appear that the video quality when compared to the original clip has suffered. After I render the project and save it as a 320×240 video, there is a CLEAR loss in quality from the original.
Essentially it would look like I’m forced in Adobe Premiere to use a higher resolution for a project than I want, zoom in on my footage, then scale the entire thing down again when I save the video.
Could anyone tell me a better way of doing this? I’m sure there is but I haven’t been able to find much help on this subject.

When creating a new project, choose custom , “Desktop” editing mode, and change the frame size to 320×240.
Anything else is forcing Premiere to upscale the footage, then downscale again at export time, and will result in the quality loss you described.
