  • Editing 2 camera video

I shot video of my niece’s wedding using two cameras. I fixed the first camera in place and had it record for the entire ceremony. I used the second camera to move around. I took about 25 clips with the second roving camera. After placing the fixed and roving clips on separate tracks, I’ve been able to sync the roving camera clips perfectly with the fixed camera clip using flash and audio cues.

I’d like to edit video from both cameras down to one track with switching back and forth between the fixed and roving clips. I’ve tried razor blading clips and putting them into a third track but seems too cumberson. There must be an easier way to do this. Any advice?

    Thanks,
    Dave

There was a post recently that discussed a similar issue. Look at the one month archives and you should find it there. If you have any specific questions, feel free to post them here.

I would suggest putting the static wide shot on track 1 and your moving shot on track 2. Anytime the roving camera has an undesirable shot make a cut there and adjust the clip to the right until the next good shot starts. This will leave a space where track 1 will show through. This way no moving of the tracks are needed. Make sure not to move the clip while adjusting in and out points on the timeline or the timing will get messed up. Fades can be placed on track 2 and it will automatically fade to track 1 (between the two cameras). If there are 3 camera’s this can be done with 3 or more video tracks.

My solution using three cameras was to use keyframes and opacity. After I got all the video synced on their own tracks, I simply used 0% opacity on the top track to cut it out let track 2 be visible. If I wanted to see track 3, then I set the opacity of track 2 to zero as well over some section. I was then able to drag the keyframes right and left to adjust the transition points.

The only draw back is that with a few color correction effects added, the video will not play in real time for any lenght of time. If this is an issue for you, you can always razor blade at the keysframes and simply delete the sections that were at 0%.

If you dont’ have Multicam (very nice, I have it on 2 systems)then resize each video on video track 1 & 2 to 50% and place one on left side of monitor and track 2 on the other side next to it. Now that they are side by side, view them both at the same time and either cut as desired or place marker stops at the point you want to go to cam 1 or 2 (whatever) as reminder stops. Cut as you please. You can pull down track 2 video top one when done and use the rolling edit tool to fine trim. It’s a breeze! Ron
