  • Editing 1024×576 footage

I appreciate the masses of posts regarding widescreen and if there’s one that answers my question then I apologise.
I’m editing PAL footage shot by a DSR450 with an aspect ratio of 1024×576. I want to burn the final movie onto DVD keeping the resolution.
When I edit the footage in FCP the sequence settings say 720×576 (there doesn’t appear to be a setting for 1024×576 – all looks well in the canvas). Should I change my sequence settings or are they indeed important if I’m exporting a file where I specify the size.
The only way I can find to export a quicktime file keeping that ratio is to use quicktime conversion and specify the frame size. Is this correct?
So to recap – my two question are 1) what sequence settings should I be using to edit 1024×576 footage and 2) what is the best way to export this to burn to DVD (either using DVD SP or iDVD 6)?
Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

The DSR450 shoots DVCAM. In PAL that’s 720×576. There is no 1024×576. The material is anamorphic. Your sequence should be DV PAL anamorphic.

Exporting for DVD is different for DVDSP than for iDVD. First export the native material, then if you’re working in DVDSP go to Compressor and use one of the anamorphic presets and adjust to taste.

iDVD does not support anamorphic material. To use anamorphic material see this https://www.fcpbook.com/Video9.html

    All the best,

    Thanks for your reply Tom.
As I didn’t shoot the footage myself I can not be 100% sure it was shot on DSR450 (although this was what I was told)…nor did I capture the material. However, on looking at the captured files through Quicktime and going to Movie Info it says the normal and actual size is 1024×576.
    Any ideas?

It would appear that whoever gave you the QuickTime files has altered the properties, to allow it to display properly in the player. Load in your footage again go to properties and select the video track. Uncheck the aspect ratio box and change the 1024 to 720, hit return then recheck the aspect box.

You will now have a proper anamorphic file whic will work properly in FCP.

    Hope this helps
