Posted by Hoss Sarbaz on January 22, 2009 at 3:33 amCan anyone recommend a good book building good editing skills?

January 22, 2009 at 6:01 pmedit some documentaries.
I have found spending time reading pulls me away from honing editing skills.
Not trying to be smart but the best way to get started doing anything is to start doing it.

January 22, 2009 at 7:40 pmI find that watching Films and Documentaries and specifically focusing on the editing is a great way to pick up some editing techniques.

January 22, 2009 at 8:23 pmAs noted, the best way to learn is to watch and do it. But then you have to know what you’re looking for, and it can’t hurt to read what seasoned pros have to say. Here are some books I’ve enjoyed:
In the Blink of an Eye by Walter Murch
The Conversations with Walter Murch
Fine Cuts by Roger Crittenden
101 Things I learned in Architecture School by Matthew FrederickGood luck!

January 27, 2009 at 1:13 amTime spent shooting and editing documentaries is definitely where you will learn your personal style and techniques.
I’ve done a lot of studying on how to edit stories and articles, so I edit with those techniques in mind (clearness, conciseness, beginning, middle, end). I’ve also heard from someone with musical background say they edit with musical theory in mind.
The idea is to apply what you know or something you’re interested in into the creation process.
Here are some books I’ve found helpful in learning editing:
– Stein on Writing by Sol Stein
– The Elements of Style by William Strunk Jr. and EB White
– On Writing Well by William Zinsser
– Godel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid by Douglas R Hofstadterand to get a historical perspective on documentary film making read
– Documentary: A History of the Non-fiction Film by Erik BarnouwBut whatever you do, just keep creating and getting hands on experience.

January 27, 2009 at 3:01 amThank you for the info!
I will check out the books!
If I may ask how do I get in with a post house to start cutting for them. I have the skills, but I’m having heck of a time getting my foot in the door.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Check out the bottom of the main page of the COW. There is a Job section. I would also recommend looking up the local companies in your area and contact them directly. See if they have any internships available or jobs for individuals with your skill level. Best of luck.Check out my DVD Money Making Graphics & Effects for Final Cut Studio 2
