April 3, 2007 at 2:45 pmNo need to configure anything. Open Timeline means that any Avid OMF or MXF media may be mixed on the same timeline and will play in RT. SD and HD can be mixed and will be up or downconverted based on the project setting. This can be switched back and forth during editing as well. A mixed SD/HD timeline can be either SD or HD output at any given time.
Since all Avid media is acquired via capture or import, it will always be digitized or transcoded to an Avid codec. This differs from FCP or Premiere Pro, which lets the editor grab media from any drive and import it into the interface without transcoding. The Avid approach duplicates media and may require a transcode on import, but lets you mix formats without rendering once you start editing. The Apple/Adobe approach does not duplicate media, but rendering to a common target codec is required to play the mixed timeline smoothly.
