Just finished an editing gig last night where editing to tape took over 5 hours (project was 43 mins) and we never got the 2nd sequence out.

first attempt I had to abort because I forgot to enter an “in” for the DBeta.
2nd try aborted, client didn’t hear audio
3rd try, an error saying something to the sort: “you may have a file that is not compatible with your edit to tape settings” and therefore could not “edit to tape”

???th time…. I nested the seq into a new seq and re-rendered and things were good.

Had to output another seq (a clone of the first except different logo) and got the same file compatibility message. Although I don’t remember the message exactly, I do remember it said “may” which struck me weird. First of all if my 8bit uncompressed seq is rendered fully and screened numerous times what could be incompatible? Nesting it and re-rendering did no good on this one.

Not sure if I’ll get to finish the outputting or if the client will take it to a diff post house since this facility I was at didn’t have a tech staff and was a pretty rough set-up especially since the facility produces a nationally broadcast series. Did most of the work off premises and just did my finishing/outputting at their place. Would love to know if I missed something or if the system was buggy. Wish I could tell you more about the system other than it was FCP 5.1.4 with an AJA box. Can’t tell you a thing about the G5.
95% of the footage was loaded as SDI A/V 8-bit NTSC –and as I said the seq was 8 bit uncompressed.

I often have problems editing to tape, but they always go away when I trash preferences. Not sure why it’s like that, but it works.

I had trashed them and still had same problem.

The usual reason that error message is shown is if you have slug or graphic loaded into the Viewer and you click the Insert or Assemble buttons on the ETT window. FCP is trying to edit a non-video source to tape and it can’t.

In my experience, the most reliable way to do an ETT is to drag the sequence from the Browser to the Insert or Assemble overlay in the ETT window.
