  • Edit To Tape w/ AJ-1400

    Hello everyone –
This is our first time laying back a project to tape w/ our AJ-1400 deck… and we’ve been having an impossible time. Can anyone give me the step by step process?
We have a DVPRO 720p60 timeline and want to go the same out to tape. The deck is connected to the computer HDSDI via a Kona3 (I am monitoring HDSDI out Panasonic LH2600W). Right now, I get audio just fine, but no picture.

Initially, I set up to record TC to the tape. I used TC preset, set it to 00:58:30:00, hit record, and nothing happened. Can anyone walk a dummy though this process?

[Justin Toops] “Right now, I get audio just fine, but no picture.”

What is your video input set to? Audio and video are two different settings.

Also, what’s your Easy Setup? It should be AJA Kona 3 720/59.94 DVCPro HD.

Easy Setup is set to DVCPROHD 720p/59.94.
Video (on deck) is set to HDSDI.

The preview monitor shows a constant refreshing green flicker / flash. No picture… only audio.

[Justin Toops] “Easy Setup is set to DVCPROHD 720p/59.94.”

Wrong. You said you have an AJA Kona 3. The correct Easy Setup is the one I said in my first post. AJA Kona 3 720p/59.94 DVCPro HD. If you just have the regular DVCPro HD easy setup, you’re not using the Kona 3.

Correction: the easy setup is Aja Kona 3: DVCPROHD 720p/59.94. Still no video, just green flicker.
If anything, I should be able to record time code, right? Yet that it just pauses after I hit record.
    Appreciate your help.

Is your deck properly set up for 720p/59.94? Or is it showing 1080i on the front panel?

You’re right – it’s showing 1080i. I’m assuming now that I’ve got to dive through the menus to change it to 720p?

Yes, get the manual out or look at the Super Output. It’s something like menu 24 or 25 I think. System Format: 1080

    Got it – thanks walter!
Changed the Sys Format to 720p… picture shows up great on the monitor. We’re in business.

Last q: I still can’t lay black/TC to this tape. I’ve set the timeline on some slug, used the TC preset on the deck to set 00:58:30:00… hit record, and get nothing. The red record button stays lit up, but the time code doesn’t start recording. Is there another switch I need to hit to record some simple TC?

Have you tried using the black and code buton in the ETT window? Set the deck to TCG REGEN and then try to black the tape from FCP. You set the TC Start time and DF or NDF in FCP.

You can either black the whole tape and then insert audio and video, or if you are in a hurry, black the first minute or so, rewind the tape and ETT using Assemble. The deck will REGEN where your Assemble begins (assuming you have TC where the edit starts and the deck is set to REGEN)

Worked Awesome. I didn’t even know that button was there in ETT. Thanks!
