  • Edit to Tape timecode drift with Sony DSR-1800

    Hey there,

I’m using a Sony DSR-1800 and connected by firewire to a dual-core Intel MacPro with OSX 10.5.5, using FCP 6.0.6. I’m running into a timecode problem when trying to use the Insert Edit function in the Edit to Tape tool.

I striped the first couple minutes of my tape to include my sequence in-point. I left the timecode setting on the deck at “Preset” (which I think was wrong but I’ll get to that later), set my in-point in the ETT window and attempted to use the assemble edit function for my sequence which was 23.98 fps. What resulted was my sequence being recorded to tape 10 frames ahead of the timecode on the tape. That is to say that at 1:00:00:00 on the tape, picture was at 1:00:00:10 in my sequence.

I tried dropping a 23.98 quicktime into a 29.97 sequence and starting over. This resulted in a 12-frame drift.

In doing some research on this issue, I discovered that I should likely have the deck set to “REGEN”. But this resulted in even less success. The deck would cue up, start rolling without recording any picture to the tape, stop after a about a second, rewind a bit and then the whole process would stop without even so much as an error message from FCP.

One thing I notice is that the deck doesn’t seem to be initiating any preroll before attempting to record. The deck cues itself up to the in-point as opposed to 3 seconds prior, despite the fact that FCP is currently set to use a 3-frame preroll.

    Any advice?

And while we’re on the topic, here’s a question that has an answer that is probably so obvious I can’t find it definitely stated anywhere: do DV formats carry VITC timecode?

If you want frame accurate timecode, you will need to to connect via RS-422. You will also need either the Keyspan RS-422 adapter or a AJA, Blackmagic or Matrox capture card or io Box.
