  • Edit to Tape – Tape Initialize Window?

Posted by Todd Carter on September 19, 2007 at 4:19 pm

I’ve been trying to edit to tape a sequence for two days now.
I need the sequence to be timecode specific.
The problem i’m having is whenever FCP ‘edits to tape’ it lays it’s own timecode that I can’t seem to specify.
I’ve blacked my tape with specific timecode generated from the deck. (JVC BR-HD50)That didn’t work because FCP though came in at the right spot, but laid it’s own different timecode. I have also tried to Black and Code the tape through FCP…I set up the sequence with timecode beginning at 00:58:40:02…and after, I hit blank and Code, and current settings, I think i’m supposed to see a “tape initialize” window with a starting timecode option. I do not see that. FCP goes from current settings window – to the warning about erasing the tape. Is this a FCP issue?
    Thanks.

FCP can send timecode down Firewire if that’s what you’re laying off to. So you can simply set up your timeline with the correct TC and it will feed it to the deck.

Or you have to set the Deck up for Internal TC so it will ignore FCP’s TC.

Thanks for you reply. I guess my question is how do i set up my timeline correctly? i have changed the timecode through sequence-settings-timecode… but that doesn’t seem to make a difference.

Hey I have the same problem – I loked the the tutorial from creative cow website to follow the steps but i am alos missing the initialise – window that you mention – i htought maybe someone here would know if it’s just a different version of FCP issue – so there should be a setting somewhere in the edit to tape window surely? otherwise one could black out the timeline and play out something with the correct timecode on – then play out your real sequence?

[Clea] “otherwise one could black out the timeline and play out something with the correct timecode on – then play out your real sequence?”

You must have Insert Editing capabilities on your VTR in order to black and tape and then edit to it and maintain the timecode.

When I said that FCP outputs TC via Firewire, this assumes that your VTR can accept external timecode. If it cannot, then you have make an Assemble Edit at the point of the edit and allow the deck to Regenerate TC.

Here’s how we do it on BetaSP, same rules apply to any other deck.

Preset our TC on the Beta deck to 00:58:00:02 (DF TC)

Hit Play and Record on the VTR. Allow this to record for approx. 15 seconds, Stop and switch it to Remote control to allow FCP take control during the edit.

The Deck is set to INTERNAL TC and Regenerate. This means that the VTR itself will be regenerating it’s own timecode, NOT accepting it from FCP.

In Final Cut Pro, we have a timeline with Matched TC, that is our Timeline starts at 00:58:00:02.

We set an In Point in the Timeline at 00:58:10:00.

    We launch Edit to Tape.

Set an In Point in the Edit to Tape window at 00:58:10:00.

Now the VTR and Timeline are set to start at the same TC.

    Perform an Assemble Edit.

Edit happens at 00:58:10:00 and the VTR now regenerates matched TC starting at that timecode so we end up with a perfectly matched Master on tape.

Hi thanks for you response – i know it’s not ideal – but i’m outputting to a PD 170 camera – it does do the black thing – it can accept timecode from FCP – it just always starts it at 00:00:00:00 – i still don’t get why i don’t get the extra window as outlined in the Edit to Tape free tutorial on the site. it would seem that if i could just tell it what timecode to start – on the fcp system itself – all of this would work out –

i was able to sync the timecode but reworking my timeline so it could match up to a 00:00:10:00 – i just can’t do it the way the guy suggested. also i don’t get why the extra 2 frames?

    Hi
With a Sony device that does not support Insert Editing – which will include your camcorder – read this thread where Shane Ross describes a possible solution.
