Ive shot some footage in 720.. Will I lost much quality if I upscale it all to 1080?

Its just for my showreel so technically doesn’t need to be full 1080 but may as well upscale if i can without losing quality

Why not edit in original format and upscale if at all just at a final export stage.

I don’t see any benefit to upscaling to 1080 given what you’ve said. If it’s your demo reel then I would want it to look as good as it good, not soften it by upscaling. What do you gain in 1080?

If you’re going to put it on a Blu-ray or to the web, 720 will look crisp. Remember too, if you’re going to the web that will be another softening as a whole (720 –> 1080 –> h.264 mp4 –> YouTube/Vimeo recompress it after upload). All things being equal I’d just cut out that 1080 step.

But if it makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside then I’d go with Mike’s suggestion and soften it (upscale it) at the end – once you have a final edit.

    Just my $.02

We do local market car spots airing all across the country.

We edit almost exclusively at 720.

I then can easily generate 1080 deliverables and SD center cut deliverables.

I think the 1080 upconverts from 720 hold up pretty well.

Blowing up the footage to 1080 will definitely soften it.

In our shop we edit all 720p natively then use our AJA Kona cards or the AJA KiPro to convert the footage to 1080i for final delivery where necessary. That’s the best way to do it.

Cutting in 720p also gives you cleaner, progressive delivery for the internet.
