April 19, 2005 at 3:12 pmTrue…but the bigger issue is saving all of that hard drive space. Where a BetaSP package might yield 1 or 2 hours of footage…. people shooting DV,DVCAM,DVCPRO25/50 are now handing in twice the amount of footage. Tapes are cheap, experimentation is up! 🙂
It would be nice to keep everything in its native format… but we’ll see what happens. If a Cinewave card can do it, surely an all mighty dual G5 can do it too.

With the Kona 2 I can capture pretty much anything to any format so I don’t necessarily have to capture DV footage to uncompressed. I can bring Beta down to DV or up to DVCPro HD, or HD down to SD or DV, whatever. So you don’t need to necessarily fill up drive space to work in one format. Choose the format you want to edit in and then capture all the footage to that format.
Drives are pretty cheap too, so I don’t really think drive space is all that much of an issue anymore. I have 4TB of various storage here and adding more storage is as easy as a call to macmall.
