Photoshop and Illustrator both have tools for tracing / finding edges, but(leaving aside chroma keying) After effects rotoscoping seems to require drawing the mask unaided. Are there any tools available for / within AE that would perform a similar function to the magic wand tool in photoshop that could be used to aid the rapid drawing of the mask. I guess you could export a frame to Photoshop – convert the magic wand traced edge to vectors then import the vectors back into AE as the mask but that isn’t the solution I am looking for!

There is a tutorial on this site called, Super Tight Junk Matte by Aarhon Rabinowitz. It uses Trace Edges. It should do what you need. I use this with most of my chroma keys now.
