I have CS3 and am a novice, but I would like to edge feather one side of a solid and be able to reduce its opacity as it gets further toward that edge. I can’t find an effect for that. Should it be done in PS?

In addition to Dave’s suggestion, another way is to use the Linear Wipe effect. See the bottom of that page of After Effects Help for a link to a tutorial that uses this effect to do what you’re describing.
