    You can try: Copy your clip and put it on track 2 directly above the original clip… now add a matte(from your fcp effects)-for instance Mask Shape to that clip-invert the matte filter and adjust the area you want to be sharp vs. blurred. Now add a blur to the clip… change the amount of blur to whatever you would like the blur to be… then add a mask feather to soften the edges of the area that’s blurred and the area that’s not blurred.
    Hope this might work for what you need!

    Andy’s region blur is great for a quickie outer edge blur.

    You can download it for free from andys plug -ins (a great free selection by the way).

    Just pic your blur shape, click invert to apply to the outsides and then feather the edges.
