I am wondering if anybody might be able to suggest the easiest workflow to create a dvd from FCP?

I shot HDV 1080 24p. I am editing in the latest version of Final Cut Studio. Compressor is somewhat new to me as well as dvd studio pro. I have played around and done some tests. The footage that i am achieving seems to be not as well as i would like. Here is what i have done thus far… I have created a reference mov from FCP (not self contained). I then took that to compressor and used mpeg-2 with aiff, best quality for 90 min dvd. I have the frame rate on and have bumped up the quality to best for deinterlace and rate conversion. my output field is set to progressive and resize filter set to better.submit.

I then import that asset into dvd studio pro, throw together a quick menu, build and burn. I notice that dvd studio pro is compressing this already compressed m2v file. Is there another way? Am i doing something funny here? How would one skip this double-compression?

Not sure what happened there, but it should not be re-compressing in DVD SP…

How long is your program? If it’s under an hour, then open your ref movie in Compressor and set it to be The same frame rate, and don’t de-interlace it for starters (all you’re doing is throwing away a field that ends up lowering the resolution of the images), then set it to be a constant Bit rate of 7Mbits. Turn OFF frame controls. You don’t need them. This is likely the best looking MPEG you can make with compressor that will play in anybody’s DVD player or computer.

The entire project is longer than an hour, but it is to be broken down and the discs will be shorter than an hour each.

It appears that i have no choice to NOT deinterlace. This is what is confusing to me. here is a screen shot.

I was told that turning the frame rate on would increase the quality when applying different settings.

And DVD SP seems to automatically compress the footage when you build and burn your project. It seems that I am doing an extra step that may not be necessary, but i am lost as to how to create a high quality file that I can take directly into dvd sp from FCP.

I have been creating a quicktime .mov from FCP (self-contained NOT checked) and then use Compressor to make the video and audio files that will work for my project. From there I have been taking that file into DVD SP and making my DVD.

    Any suggestions?

Yep… follow my instructions above. Since you’ll not be putting more than an hour on a single DVD. It’s going to look peachy.
