  • Easy way to reverse stacking order in timeline?

Posted by Mike Mackenzie on September 27, 2010 at 6:15 pm

    Hey everyone…

I suspect this is an easy one, but I cannot figure an easy answer…I’m hoping someone out there can.

Let’s say I have a 100 layer comp, and I want to reverse the stacking order of the layers in the Timeline, so that the top layer is on the bottom, the 2nd layer is second from the bottom, etc. (again I mean Timeline stacking order, not position).

Is there a simple way to do this, or do I have to manually drag each layer down to where I want it on the Timeline?

    Thanks!
    -Mike

Click the layer you want to be the first layer, shift click the layer you want to be the last layer, then cut (ctrl/cmd+x) and paste (ctrl/cmd+v). Voila!

It’s only work if you’d rather be doing something else…

Thank you, this was super-easy and worked like a charm!
What a great, time-saving shortcut. I am naming my firstborn Steve Blacker, even if it’s a girl!

Select the bottom-most layer in your comp then shift-select the top-most layer in your comp (which should select all the layers). Copy. Delete. Paste. The stacking order should be reversed.

So I basically need to do the same thing, except for shapes within a single shape layer.

I have a bunch of lines of text on a page, and I’m doing a trim paths, to make it look like it’s written on, but they need to move in the opposite direction, top to bottom, not bottom to top.

For a bunch of parallel lines, this same copy past function doesn’t work within a shape layer… :/

unfortunately no. even stacking order shortcuts (Ctrl+[ Ctrl+] or Ctrl+Shift+[ Ctrl+Shift+]) don’t work with shape content (or type content for that matter). do us all a favor and ask for it here: https://www.adobe.com/products/wishform.html

in the meantime, maybe you will find this script useful: https://aescripts.com/bq_shape-layer-navigator/
