  • Easy setup for HDV?

Posted by Robert Douglas on March 6, 2006 at 6:07 am

    Hi all,

I am trying to capture 1080I HDV 60 fields from a JVC HDV camera into a dual 2.5 core Mac G5 with Tiger and Decklink HD Pro card with 8 gigs of ram, Final Cut 5.04. The Apple intermediate codec setup captures at the wrong frame rate and the Decklink HDV 1080I 60 fields doesn’t capture at all. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,
    RD

I believe alot of the problem is that FCP doesn’t really have any support for HDV made by other manufacturers other than Sony. JVC & Canon have different ways of recording HDV on their systems. My best advise for you is to contact Blackmagic about supporting the JVC, otherwise, I’m pretty sure you’ll have to have supplimental software like LumiereHD in order to capture from your JVC.

By the way, you do know that the JVC HDV is 720 only. THe Sony HDV is the only HDV that can capture 1080i.

This is not correct. FCP supports Sony 1080i, JVC 720p30 and 1080i and 720p30 in Canon. It only supports 60 and 30 frame rates, but it say it only supports Sony is just not right.

    All the best,

    Tom

A lot of my cleints are having this same problem. There is no easy solution that does not involve 12 steps for getting 23.98 material into final cut pro from the JVC. I always recomend dubing your dailies to a more standard high def format, then down convert and work tradtionaly. At least until HDV becomes more standardized

Thanks, Tom… You’re right. I just found the same information just minutes ago myself on the web. I also found out that the new Panasonic HVX-200 supports all of these frame rates, too.
