I am a hardcore fcp guy that has to work on avid for a broadcast show. Got a couple of easy question for you guys.

    1. Is there no FIND in Avid ? Got lots of clips in my bin, and I just easily want to find clip number 345345 (can’t sort on numbers ..)

    2. Why.. oh WHY does the slugs have to be movable. Quite a few times do I end up moving one slug (black area where there is nothing).. and I end up not being sure if I have messed up or not.. Can I turn this option off ?

    3. Why is there no way I can just drag a video track, and the audio follows ??

    4. I end up using alot more button pushing and mouse moving in avid than I used to do in FCP. Supposed to be like this ??

    5. Give me an example of when I actually want to turn off the in-sync buttons ? sometimes when I add video tracks I forget to turn on the sync and everything gets messes up.

Sorry if these questions are stupid.. I am just a bit curious how things work in the avid world.. and why things are like they are.

    Anders-

I’m on my way out the door, but here are a few quick responses:

    1. Is there no FIND in Avid ? Got lots of clips in my bin, and I just easily want to find clip number 345345 (can’t sort on numbers ..)

DT>In the bin, click on the “name” heading and then Ctrl + E to sort alphabetically/numerically. Alt + Ctrl + E is reverse sort. If that isn’t good enough, use “custom sift” under the “Bin” heading to sift the bin for the clips you want.

    4. I end up using alot more button pushing and mouse moving in avid than I used to do in FCP. Supposed to be like this ??

DT>The keyboard is your friend. Learn the shortcuts and force yourself to hit the keyboard commands instead of the clickable buttons.

    5. Give me an example of when I actually want to turn off the in-sync buttons ? sometimes when I add video tracks I forget to turn on the sync and everything gets messes up.

DT> I never use in-sync buttons, so I’m not going to be much help to you there. I just make sure I have the proper tracks active or not active when I’m moving things around. Again, keyboard commands will speed this up (Ctrl+A=select all tracks / Shift+Ctrl+A=deselect all tracks). Whatever way makes the most sense in your workflow, use it and eventually you won’t think about it.

Sorry if these questions are stupid.. I am just a bit curious how things work in the avid world.. and why things are like they are.

DT> Keep the questions coming. Learning a new interface is difficult and sometimes frustrating, but it sounds like you’re well on your way already.

GO to the fast menu (hamburger menu) in the bottom left corner of your bin. Select “Custom Sift”, you can show only those entries that match wha you are sifting by.

Go back and select “Show Unsifted” when you are done.
