easiest way to export timeline to dvd

You are correct. You must export to a QuickTime movie and then use Compressor to encode an MPEG2 movie and either Aiff or AC3 audio file. I don’t know how Toast would handle these files as I use DVD Studio Pro to create the final DVD. I suggest you use the Export QuickTime movie and not Export Using QuickTime Conversion which re compresses the media. Uncheck the “Make Movie Self-Contained” box to create a “by reference movie” if hard drive space is an issue. This creates a movie that references the individual clips used in your exported sequence.

I checked out the DVD encoding capability of Toast and you can drag the Quicktime file into Toast, create a menu and encode a DVD. I didn’t go through with the encode.

great, do you think toast can handle a quicktime reference movie, because disk space is an issue.

this seems to be the easiest step, becuse i dont need a menu, so i have no need for DVD studio pro, and if i used compressor, i would still need to take those files to toast to get them onto a dvd, is that correct?

Toast will import the MPEG2 file, but does not see the audio file as linked to the video. Importing Quicktime directly to Toast negates the need to go to Compressor. It looks as if choosing the DVD option in Toast creates a final DVD with or without menu. You can also choose the quality level as well. The reference Quicktime movie should work, but you might want to export a two-minute segment from your project as a test. I don’t know how long Toast takes to encode and then write the files to DVD.

And yes, you can import an AVI into FCP. You may get a message that the media is not optimized for FCP, but you can ignore that. I assume that your AVI files are DV-25.

Let me ask you this, Tristan.

Are you really dead set on using Toast? I’m sure that is what you are used to using BUT DVDSP is so much more powerful in its DVD creation.

And to answer your original question about outputting your timeline to DVD… Yes, you can output directly from your timeline into Compressor to create your MPEG2 files, AIFF and AC3 files for use in ANY DVD program. If you set chapter markers in FCP, they will go right along into the MPEG2 file so that you can create DVD chapters in whatever program you choose.

I create a self contatined QT from FCP and then drag that into DVDSP.
Deleted the menu, make the QT file the first play and then set the “End Jump” to go back to the beginning of the QT when done.

It works with a reference movies as well, I just tried it.

i am not dead set on toast, i am just looking for the quickest way possible to do this, since i am used to doing it in one shot in prem pro. if i can export a quicktime ref file, into any program that will encode and burn to dvd i will be happy. i dont need a menu or anyting. Will dvdsp do all this? and if so, is this softwear bundled with fcp sutdio? if not i cant buy it right now….
