EASIER WAY TO MOVE CLIP ONE FRAME AT A TIME BACK AND FOURTH IN TIMELINE???
I’m trying to get about 10 seconds of sync sound out of some footage that I shot of my friend laying down a track in the studio. Unfortunately, even though it’s the same song, it’s NOT the same take. In other words the video that I want to use is NOT the same as the audio… same song, same lyrics different take. So there are obviously slight variations.
I want to figure out how I can move a 10 second clip of video back and fourth in the timeline ONE FRAME AT A TIME quickly and presisely.
The way that I’m currently doing it (the slow way) is to zoom in so I can see the end (or front) of the video clip and then making sure the scrubber bar is exactly one frame ahead (or behind) and then just dragging the whole clip to snap to the scrubber. The audio is obvioulsy locked off below. This is how I’ve been achieving my sync. It’s a total pain in the ass… I end up doing this for about 15 minutes for each cut.Is there an easier way. Why can’t I just select the clip and then hit a special button or combo of buttons that does this perfectly for me (one frame at a time)….??
This is one of those “LITTLE” things that I’ve neglected to figure out for months… and it keeps coming up.
Any suggestions? -

Select the audio or video independently and use the < or > keys. (It’s actually , and . but I think of it as < and >. Shift-< and Shift-> will move it the user specified trim amount.)

Just click on the clip you want to move and press “+” or “-” then how many frame you want to move. eg: to move a clip 4 frames forward press “+4” then enter

You also can hold down the option key an use the arrow key for one frame or option shift arrow for 5 frames. The latter is very handy for quickly and accurately locating keyframe points for manual opacity changes or whatever.

Or you can do this dynamically by using the slip tool with the command key held down. Bonus! You get the two-up window in the Canvas.Try doing a search for “Slip” in the manual. You should see all of the techniques listed here. Slipping is one of the basic tenets of the editing trade. Yep, every NLE has several ways to slip.
I hope you won’t take this the wrong way but I bet if you took a certified class in FCP, all of these tricks would be revealed to you. This is definitely in the 101 course material.
I consider it an enlightening thing to take courses, you can never stop learning. I take ’em all the time.
