I’m new to FCP – coming from AVID. I work at an agency and we do all of our finishing work out of house on Flames, Smokes and the like.

I am having trouble creating effective EDL.

Is it me – am I missing somehting or is FCP EDL generator really sub-par?

    Please Help.

    All EDL’s are subpar.

If you’re going to be working between FCP and Avid, then you want the Automatic Duck Pro Importer / Exporter so you can send OMF and AAF files between them. Then you can open an Avid Project on FCP and an FCP project on Avid.

    FAR superior than EDL’s.

Thanks Walter – The problem is going to Flame or Smoke. Is Auto Duck also the solution for those machines. I am getting requests for CMX-3600 A-Modes, but see ony the CMX 3600 opt in FCP – sans the A-mode suffix.

Sorry, I don’t think you can get any help for those machines through the Duck unless they can read an Avid project or an OMF.

My suggestion is to test a few of the EDL settings to see if any of them work in your situation. I’ve never had to do an EDL in all my years of NLE editing, so I honestly can’t help you there.

I’m sure someone will be able to pipe on here and give you some thoughts.

Ask them if they’ll take XML – it’s like an EDL on steroids (includes motion attributes, etc). Last time I went to finish an FCP project on Smoke, XML worked perfectly.

WARNING, though… if you go the XML route, output XML’s in numerous XML formats for safety… The newer XML formats have some advantages over old ones, but are less compatible with other systems. I recently exported an XML in it’s default setting (“Type 4” I believe) from Final Cut 6… only to find out that ONLY Final Cut 6 could read it – all other software simply couldn’t open the file. So I had to send them another, earlier format of XML which they could read.

So just output numerous formats, just in case.

    Dear “ding”,

In FCP’s EDL maker, there’s a choice of “sort modes”: Master sort or source sort.

“Master sort” is the default and it’s known as “A Mode”. “B mode” would be source sort. There’s also a “C and D” mode, but I don’t believe that FCP supports it.

Do a google search on “EDL’s” and you’ll find a wealth of info. Wikipedia also has good write up. Know that any EDL will only handle one video track at a time and a max of four audio trks.
Any kind of effect beyond a simple dissolve is unlikely to translate to your destination on-line system, and may cause the EDL maker to just not work. EDL’s are soooooo old school.

You best bet would be to just finish in FCP.

    Thanks for your help everyone.
    The A-mode tip really helps.
I’m going to sit down with my online vendors and work out a better work flow.
I would love to finish everything in FCP – but we do some effects work that is far beyond my ability. So working out an ideal workflow between FCP and Flame is key.
