  • Dynamic Trimming?

Posted by Sum Choi on December 28, 2012 at 9:49 pm

I’ve been looking on the net to see if there is like a dynamic trimming function in FCPX. It seems like there is not. Can somebody confirm this for me?
So, I can’t trim and play my timeline simultaneously now?

You need to be more specific about what you mean by dynamic trimming. Normally dynamic trimming is done in a trim edit window not in the timeline. If you want to trim numerically or with the keyboard while playing an edit. Select the edit point with [ or ] or and use Shift-/ for playaround. Use comma or period or Shift-comma or Shift-period to trim. These adjustments can be made during playback with looped playback.

    All the best,

If I am using comma and period or shift-comma and shift-period, I’m using trimming 1 or 5 frames at a time right?
Isn’t there real-time trimming. Let’s say while I’m playing a video, and I want it to trim at the spot where I press a button, isn’t there this function?

    One frame or 10 frames.

Shift-X will do an extend edit in the timeline to either ripple or roll.

    Hi Sum,

There is no dynamic trimming on FCPX. I would love to see this added as I find that trimming that way I get a much more natural feel for pacing on the edit. A couple work arounds I have found is to play through the edit and then stop at the point you want to place the edit. From there I can blade and delete, or use a top/tail edit to push or pull the edit point.

Another option is to double click the edit point to enter precision edit mode. Play the edit point and again stop where you want to place the edit, now click on the footage you want to trim where the stopped playhead is. This will trim it to the playhead and exit precision edit mode. Unfortunately this method only works in the primary storyline. You can not enter precision edit mode on connected clips or secondary story lines.

I realize that this is a missing feature many love. I used to use it on Avid back in the day, but when FCP legacy didn’t really have anything comparable for the first 3 versions or so, I adapted my style to the methods mentioned above and don’t really miss it. Since X can edit audio at the sub frame level I find myself doing less and less trimming on the fly and being more exact. Less audio cross dissolves and dynamic trimming and more zooming into the waveform and working more like in an audio app with lopsided audio fades.

Did you read my response? All of the edits I mentioned can be done on the fly including the extend edit, which can be either a ripple or a roll edit.

    All the best,

    Tom

    Hey Bret,

I find myself doing that as well. I am editing more with my eyes looking at the waveforms than my ears as with a dynamic trim. It works, but it still is not the same for me. With dynamic trimming I can get more of the rhythm and cadence of someones speech which helps me place the cut where I want it. I don’t really get that from looking at waveforms.

    Hey Tom,

I did read your response and it brought up a question. Is there a way to play around the edit in a loop play? That was one of the things I liked in dynamic trimming. I could loop play the edit continuously and add or remove frames as needed.

Yes. Cmd-L turns on looped playback. Shift-/ plays around with whatever pre-roll/post-roll prefs you set.
