  • Dynamic texture mapping using video on top of 3d models?

Posted by David Quinton on September 20, 2017 at 1:07 am

I’m trying to develop 3d clothing with videos projected onto the fabric, in order to make the prints on the clothing animated. I can’t find a tutorial that covers anything close to this for any program, even before entering the dynamic realm. I was hoping Cinema 4D would be the solution, but I am open to anything.

This is what I was inspired by https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkXrLZmnQ_M

Yes, you can use video as a texture on a model in C4D, which I think would be the easiest and quickest way to simulate what was being done live through tracking and projecting in your YouTube example.

You could also use camera mapping to project a texture onto a model. And in order to recreate the tracking of the projection you would simply link the projection camera to your model so that it was always in the same relative position to the model as it moved (like a projector on a frame that was attached to a dancer and pointing at his chest); which is easy enough but would essentially give you the same result as using video as a texture. I guess it just depends on what your goal is.

If you don’t own C4D yet you could try the trial version to see if it will suit your needs.

Just out of curiosity, are you really planning to PROJECT video onto the fabric of your clothing like they did in the video? Or did you mean that the fabric would be something like a flexible LED mesh that would display the video itself? It is a fascinating concept, and one that could be a lot of fun to implement and design for.

    Good luck.

The whole point of projection mapping in the real world (as in that video) is to give the illusion that the projected image is attached to the fabric and moves with the person. The beauty of doing this sort of thing inside a 3D package is that you can literally stick a texture onto an animated character’s shirt and it will warp and follow the movement of the character as though it had been printed there (you may need a “stick texture” tag so that any mesh deformers also warp the texture). A video texture is no different from a bitmap texture, except that you can set in and out points for the video frames (its the animation tab inside the material’s bit map settings)
Often a “flat” mapping routine will be enough for a decal on a shirt but you may want to consider a “cylindrical” mapping setting to let the texture wrap around the body.
