Easily done in photoshop, but not so easy in AE.
Effect can be seen best @ 1:36, as well as 1:30-1:33 and 1:46

This is not simply masking the text layer or using a track matte, as the characters cannot be cut off, but rather dynamically fill the shape as it animates. I’ve tried using the text box/Path feature with a mask, but that bends the text lines and messes with the letter spacing, rather than keeping the lines perfectly straight, as you can see in the references.
I’m assuming at this point that this is done with a third party plugin, as the Text Box Path feature seems pretty limited. Any thoughts??
