    Hi,
Sorry to post this here, I had no idea where to post it, but since I’ve been posting mainly in this forum and I assume most of you are pro-editors it makes sense that I ask you.

I’ve been editing with my monitor connected through VGA. Is that really stupid? I’ve noticed that both my computer and my monitor can be connected through DVI. SHould I switch?
    Thanks
    Phil

Here is a good discussion on this topic. Personally I have both and don’t see any difference. I believe it really depends on the monitor/card and what you application is. Do a search on Google DVI VS Analog (D-SUB). Hope this helps.

The short answer is: Yes. DVI is digital while VGA is analog. Your computer is digital and your LCD is digital (CRT’s are analog). So you are converting a digital signal in your computer to an analog signal to send it to your LCD so that it can convert it back to a digital signal. That seems silly. Just send the original digital signal to your LCD via DVI and be done with it.

While the difference might be very subtle, I would bet that something is being lost in the analog conversion so why do it.

The difference is NOT subtle, it is remarkable. When I bought my pair of Dell widescreen monitors, my display adapter card had one VGA and one DVI port. Side-by-side comparisons were remarkable. The DVI was noticeably sharper than the VGA side.

    I now have a dual-DVI adapter.
