    Hi,

I’m trying to lay off to tape using a Sony HVRM25E deck. Project is NTSC. Two questions:

    1. no sign of anything DVCAM related in the sequence settings etc. Does FCP not recognise DVCAM?

    2. If, as I suspect, it doesn’t – does that mean I’m going to have to ‘print to video’ instead of ‘edit to tape’ hence lose TC frame accuracy, ability to start at 10:00:00:00 (as we Europeans are wont?)

When I try to ‘edit to tape’ at present, the darn thing just does nothing at all.

    Cheers

You want the DV NTSC Easy Setup.

Whether you can perform insert and assemble edits depend on what the deck supports. I am not familiar with that model. Is it firewire or RS-422 controlled?

Pre black about :30 seconds at the start fo the tape, with your timecode set to whatever you want. Then use FCP to perform an assemble edit using Edit to Tape.

    2 things-

    1. Make sure that your decks’ control settings are set to “remote” or in some cases “external”. I’m not sure about your particular deck, but the decks that I’ve used have an option to switch between local or external control.

    2. Make sure in Final Cut that your device control is set to the appropriate device under the “Device settings” tab in the “edit to tape” control window.

    Hope that helps,

Thanks John and Jason. The deck is firewire, it’s a little mini deck. that does DV/DVCAM and HDV at both 30 and 25. The deck doesn’t have a remote/local switch that I can see. Log and Capture works fine, and I’ve put it it DV-NTSC using easy setup.

So, my question is more of a DV question than anything else – can FCP insert edit properly in DV mode?

    cheers
    Robbie

    Durisdeer,

Sorry, I didn’t catch that in your post. From my experience, I have had no success for a frame accurate insert edit. I’ve been utilizing DVC Pro 50 on a Panasonic deck and can’t seem to get it to be frame accurate. The only option I’ve been able to do is find a black segment somewhere in the timeline. You’ll probably need about 15 frames of black or so to make the insert edit. I end up having to re-dub the footage from that point on. The insert feature seems to be quite sloppy in FCP.
Wish there was a better option, but that’s all that I’ve found.

AFAIK you can’t get frame accurate via firewire.
