  • DVDSP problems reading FCP Chapter Markers

Hello again and thanks in advance to anyone who might know of a workaround to this snag that I’m having.

I completed a just under 2-hour video in FCP and inserted about 55 Chapter Markers throughout it. At first, I applied them directly to the clip because I thought that having the Chapter Markers ripple with any future revisions/compressions would be great. However, when I applied the “Best 120 Minute” preset to the Export via Compressor, only three of the Chapter Markers came through to DVDSP after about 9 hours of compression.

So, I investigated what was so special about those three Chapter Markers that did make it and found out how they differred from the other 50+. On those three, I didn’t apply the Chapter Marker to the clip but instead applied it to the Timeline. So, I had the green markers instead of the red ones for those three only. Then, I figured that perhaps only the Chapter Markers applied to the Timeline are the only ones that get recognized through Compressor. So, I re-entered all of the Chapter Markers into the Timeline (made them all the green ones) and re-compressed via Compressor.

Nine more hours later, the result was the exact same thing! Only the same three Chapter Markers from the first compressed file remained in the new one. The resulting compressed for DVD file size of 4.01GB remained the same as well.

Then, I thought that perhaps the Chapter Markers I originally applied to the clip itself (the red ones) were somehow offsetting the ones in the Timeline (the green ones). This seemed to be consistent because the three that did make it to DVDSP only had the green markers and not the red. So, I went through and deleted all of the red ones and re-compressed for nine more hours via Compressor.

The result was still the same, however. Only those same three Chapter Markers show up in DVDSP. By the way, all of the Chapter Markers are individually named in FCP and I’ve double-checked that all of them have “” in there to indicate that they are all in fact Chapter Markers and not blank nor Compression or Scoring Markers.

At this point, I’m out of ideas and the manual doesn’t offer any other suggestions. Has anyone else experienced this same snag and, if so, short of re-entering the Chapter Markers manually again in DVDSP, is there any way to correct or fix this snag?

    Thanks again,
    -Pat

I’d try another sequence. copy and paste all from the original to it. Don’t think the markers will follow so you’ll probably have to redo them. It’s easier in FCP than it is in DVD SP so I’d do them there.

Of course, if you do them in DVD SP after the compression, they’ll work…

But I figure there’s a corruption in the sequence you’re working with. Might just reopen it or restart the computer to flush the RAM… But it sure would be a waste of time re encoding only to find out that the markers don’t show up again.

Not sure if you tried this or not, but I usually set my chapter markers in the timeline (hit ‘m’ twice and click on the chapter marker button. Then I export the whole sequence as a quick time movie, don’t check the self contained box, there is also a pulldown menu for including dvd markers as well. Then export then quicktime into compressor. After you enter in all your settings, click on the inspector for the mpeg2 and under one of the tabs there is a check box for including dvd chapters, make sure that is checked.
Hopefully this isn’t just a bunch of stuff you already know, but I’ve had the same problem so just thought I’d try to help.

try importing the master movie directly to dvdsp. drop it in a track. if dvdsp recognizes the markers, they will show there. then delete the video and audio tracks, thus keeping an empty track with just the markers. then import the mpeg-2 version and drop it in the empty timeline.
make sure the import settings in dvdsp match the ones in compressor. that way you can experiment with markers all you want and muxing is all the render needed for each test (wait 10-15 min, not 9 hours)

Well, thanks to just about everyone that replied, I think we all just learned two things:

    1) Chapter Markers that appear in the DVDSP Timeline from FCP appear to be un-clearable and are not overwritten by subsequent re-compressed clips that are brought into DVDSP. Sebas’s tip led to me start up a “new project” in DVDSP, which cleared the Chapter Markers. As soon as I brought in the re-compressed clip, all 55 (or so) of the Chapter Markers appeared.

    2) RamenDemon suggested exporting from FCP to a QuickTime Movie instead of to Compressor (not as a self-contained movie). Then, take the resulting QuickTime movie into Compressor. Instead of taking nine hours via Export using Compressor AND tieing up FCP all the while, it took under three hours via Export using Quicktime to do the same thing AND it freed up FCP for additional editing.

So, thanks to you all – you helped me get rid of my snag. I learned a lot more about DVDSP today (it appears the snag had nothing to do with FCP) from you all and hopefully we’ll all benefit from this thread!

    Have a good week,
