DVDA won’t stay registered

Im just here kinda pondering if you have a trojan/virus etc
on your system, that maybe is kinda causing this and other issues.
Do a thorough scan of things, i usually recommend “malwarebytes”
You would be surprised at some of the things these pests throw
out of whack on your system.

I guess that is a possibility. But I’m pretty cautious, I have a virus scanner running in real time, and I don’t have any other issues. I’m rendering something right now. When it is done, I’ll run a scan. Note though that Vegas continues to run just fine. It is just DVDA that has an issue. They were both installed at the same time.

A scan found nothing. Neither did Windows Defender.

I called Sony and they can’t figure it out either. An uninstall uninstalls cleanly and a re-install installs OK but produces the same symptoms…. unless you set it to “run as administrator”, DVDA thinks it is not registered but the register process just dies instead of completing. When set to “run as administrator”, DVDA starts and runs normally. Vegas runs normally at all times.

I sent my system specs to Sony and they will supposedly get back to me.

In the mean time I found another thread that suggests that maybe terminal services is not running. I’ll have a look tonight.

Compared to my laptop (which runs DVDA perfectly), there are no differences that I can see in the permissions or folder contents for DVDA. I also looked through the registry and didn’t find anything suspicious.

One oddity that may or may not be related…. I used to run Vegas Movie Studio Platinum bundle. While that was installed, I downloaded a copy of DVDA Pro 5.0 and installed it in trial mode. When the trial expired, I uninstalled it. When I upgraded to Vegas Pro, the Studio versions were still installed. Vegas Pro installed normally but DVDA installed to the DVDA 4.5 folder that was occupied by DVDA Studio 4.5. When I noticed this, I uninstalled ALL Sony products, deleted all folders and then re-installed. Ever since then, DVDA says it will install to a DVDA 5.0 folder but actually creates and installs to a DVDA 4.5 folder in Program Files (x86). Not sure if this means anything or not. DVDA DID work normally for a couple weeks…. this registration issue just started a couple days ago.

Well, Sony doesn’t seem to have any ideas why this is happening. DVDA starts without incident if I boot into safe mode but in normal mode it thinks it is not registered unless I run it as administrator. I have carefully looked at the permissions for the executables and the entire Sony folder tree and compared them to the permissions on my laptop (which works normally) and I don’t see any differences.

I have asked Sony several times what is involved when DVDA determines whether or not it is registered and they have not answered. I understand why they might be reluctant to explain it, but I am at an impasse here. Does anyone have any insight into how DVDA determines whether it is registered? That would be the place to look.

I can always run it as administrator, but I shouldn’t have to and it bugs me 😉

For anyone else researching this issue…..

After a great deal of communications between me and Sony, they now say they can duplicate the registration issue and there will be a fix forthcoming some time in the (unspecified) future.
