Activity Forums VEGAS Pro DVDA vs Ulead DVD Workshop

I switched to Vegas early this year after spending some time on Ulead Media Studio Pro. Nothing much I miss, Vegas has a far better workflow. Never looked back, currently only use MSP for one or two of their creative filters that are not in Vegas.

I was a frustrated MSP user, but a happy DVD Workshop user. Kinda. I was annoyed that DVD WS didn’t really support 16:9, but I have been assuming Ulead would update their product.

Looking at the activity on discussion boards etc, it seems reasonable to assume that Vegas has far more users and is currently the more successful of the two. Ulead seems to have no intentions of updating DVDWS any times soon, so the question is…

Should I upgrade my Vegas to Vegas+DVD, in other words, should I get DVDA? Has anyone out there worked with both? Pros/Cons of either. I know 3.0 was a significant update, but that DVDA seems to support fewer burners than does DVDWS. I will of course have to test mine first to be sure.

    Any opinions?

You ask on a Vegas/DVDA forum if you should switch to Vegas/DVDA?

And, you think that someone would say no?

I’ve been using DVDA for three years and I haven’t found it to be lacking in any area. What do you mean by “filters”? What do you think is missing?

I’ve read good things about DVDWorkshop in the past. As Steve said, what specific features did you like in Workshop?

DVDA3 is already a remarkably well featured and designed program.

It weakest point is probably it’s burner compatibility, but in some ways I don’t mind Sony not rushing drivers without good testing, and that really is a non-issue anyway – DVDA will prepare the precise folders to burn to DVD using apps like Nero, Record Now etc.

I like many DVDA features, including the straightforward drag and drop customizable workspace, Properties windows, end actions, delayed buttons …

Gary has done an excellent DVD on how to use DVDA3, so maybe he can list some of his favourite features.

I also switched from MSP7/8 to Vegas6. My mpeg conversions are done in Vegas6 or the stand alone MainConcepts encoder. I still prefer DVD Worshop to DVDA3. I have the workflow down so I am staying with it for now but still play around with DVDA3.

    Thanks Peter,

Actually, my first authroing program was DVD Workshop. I haven’t used it in quite a while, so hard to make a comparison. I DO remember thinking that the workflow of DVDA was totally the opposite of DVDW, and I had to unlearn my thinking a bit to use DVDA.

Of course, I am pretty comfortable with it now 🙂

With filter I mean, video filters in Vegas. There is one or two nice creative filters in Ulead MSP that do not exist in Vegas, for example a drawing type filter than can be fun to use in the right circumstances. I know you can accomplish the same in Vegas, I have read the newsletter, but it works better in MSP.

That is about the only thing I use MSP for now. Vegas is so much better.
