Hi, and thanks for taking the time to answer this question in advance.

I’m rendering a project that I’ve shot and edited in 24p. I’ve rendered the project out using the render setting in Vegas Pro 9, DVDA NTSC 23.976p widescreen. The one thing that I changed on this format is the option for 2-3 pulldown, which I didn’t use. Now I notice that my project, which is 46 minutes long, is required to be re-rendered within DVDA.

I read on here that you could choose to opt for the no 2-3 pulldown, but what I wasn’t aware of, was the fact that I’d have to re-render it with it anyways for it to work in DVDA.

I rendered a test run initially with the pull down and it looked degraded. The one I did without looks much nicer, but now it is wanting to be re-rendered anyways.

How do I get my project in 24p directly into DVDA without pulldown and without the re-render issue? Is there a way, or am I pretty much at the mercy of the 2-3 pulldown setting?

Edit: I also see the apply 2-3 pulldown option under preferences. Does this help things, if I render with 2-3 pulldown?

Bottom line is that I want the best quality 24p video to DVD possible. If anyone can share their knowledge about this, I’d greatly appreciate your input. Thanks!

You need the 2:3 pulldown to be compliant with NTSC 29.97 playback. Just render your project using the MPEG2 DVD Architect 24p NTSC Widescreen video stream and don’t change any settings and DVD Architect will happily use that file to create the DVD without any re-rendering. It should look fine on a TV set.

Yep, you were right. Plus the render time was cut in half, or more by going with the provided template. I had to do some research and found out exactly what +2-3 pulldown is. Good to know that it doesn’t actually degrade anything and is only for adding flags, so DVD players can convert on the fly if progressive playback isn’t supported. I think the real problem was that I hadn’t balanced all my levels out using the video scopes, prior to this burning. Now it looks a whole lot better.

Color correcting using video scopes was something else that I’ve learned through this long format process. I usually do only web video, but am now crossing over into DVD production, which requires attention to detail concerning broadcast legal levels.

    Thanks John for the info.
